The GMAT Test

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized assessment that evaluates skills essential for success in graduate business programs, including analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and data interpretation. Established in 1953, the GMAT has become a pivotal tool for business schools worldwide to assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management.

Exam Structure and Format

The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that adjusts the difficulty of questions based on the test taker’s responses. It comprises three main sections, each designed to measure specific competencies:

  1. Quantitative Reasoning: This section assesses your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills. It consists of 21 questions to be completed in 45 minutes. A calculator is not permitted during this section.

  2. Verbal Reasoning: This section evaluates your ability to read and comprehend written material, reason and evaluate arguments, and correct written material to conform to standard written English. It includes 23 questions with a 45-minute time limit.

  3. Data Insights: This section measures your ability to analyze and interpret data presented in various formats and from multiple sources, applying it to real-world business scenarios. It comprises 20 questions to be answered in 45 minutes.

The total duration of the exam is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with an optional 10-minute break.

Scoring

Each section of the GMAT is scored individually, and these scores are combined to generate a total score ranging from 205 to 805, in 5-point increments. This scoring system provides a comprehensive assessment of a candidate’s abilities across all tested areas.

Recent Updates

In late 2023, the GMAT introduced the “GMAT Focus Edition,” which became the sole version of the exam available as of February 1, 2024. This updated format reflects the evolving needs of business schools and applicants, emphasizing the skills most relevant to today’s business environment.
