The GRE Test

GRE stands for Graduate Record Exam. The most commonly required version of the GRE is the General Test.  The GRE General test has three parts: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. The duration of the test is just under 2 hours  and has 5 sections. Below, you can find the information on the current format of the GRE.

The Analytical Writing section measures your ability to explain and support ideas while exhibiting control and use of standard written English. The score scale is from 0-6 with an increment of 0.5.

The Verbal Reasoning sections gauge your ability to understand the author’s perspective, draw conclusions from discourse and summarize text among other things. Also, it assesses your ability to understand the meaning of words, sentences and understand the structure of a text. The score scale is 130-170.

The Quantitative Reasoning sections evaluates your ability to solve problems via mathematical models through exercises where you apply basic skills of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. The test includes an on-screen calculator. The score scale is 130-170.

With the exception of the Analytical Writing section, the sections are adaptive. In other words, the better you do, the more difficult the next section will be, as will your final score be too.
